I composed music about infertility and pregnancy loss, then performed it in a Pittsburgh hospital
1 in 4 known pregnancies in the US ends in loss. A composer explains how those numbers, along with doctors’ expertise, became a 60-minute chamber work. I composed music about infertility and pregnancy loss, performed it in a Pittsburgh hospital in 2025 for the premiere of "One in Four, One in Eight," a 60-minute piece told through music, art, dance and narration. The piece combines the human and emotional sides of infertility and loss with the procedural and scientific ones. The narrations were approved by Dr. Gabriela Gosman, Dr. Pamela Parker, Dr., Allison Serra and physician assistant Carrie Weaver from UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. The work was inspired by personal experiences and research from external sources, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
