Gillece to pay $700,000 in restitution to settle allegations of costly unnecessary work

Gillece will pay $700,000 in restitution after settling allegations that the company misled customers into paying for costly unnecessary sewer pipe replacements. Gillece Services, Gillece Plumbing and Heating, Thomas Gillec Sr., Thomas Gilece Jr. and two former technicians have agreed to pay $700,000 in restitution to Pennsylvania over allegations that the company engaged in scare tactics and misled customers into unnecessary sewer pipe replacements. The state alleges that Gilleced used scare tactics to entice customers to sign home improvement contracts, falsely stating that their sewer pipes needed to be replaced for physical defects that didn't exist. The company was also accused of work inconsistent with its written warranties and failing to give customers copies of their contracts and notices of cancelation at the time of sale. The settlement includes $700k in consumer restitution, $50k in costs and $250k in suspended civil penalties. Former Gilleces technicians James Hackwelder and Joseph Nikoula have been banned from the plumbing industry for five years.
