Pittsburgh Airport Is Testing AI-Powered Robot Dogs To Help Terminal Staff

On September 29, an overflowing trash can served as a test case during a demonstration at Pittsburgh International Airport. Pittsburgh International Airport is partnering with Skild AI to introduce up to four autonomous robots in a six-month trial at the airport. The robots, which run on software developed by Pittsburgh-based SkildAI, are being tested in a busy terminal where passengers and employees move through the same spaces. The airport is looking at whether the robots can identify changing conditions and report them to employees responsible for addressing them. The project includes two charging stations and designated areas for the robots to avoid. The pilot will also test whether the robot can recognize spills, identify full or nearly full trash cans, and report congestion in crowded areas.
