Pittsburgh startup swaps plastic pill bottles for paper
Point Breeze-based Parcel Health, fresh off a spot on TIME's Best Inventions list, is building momentum beyond Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh-based startup, Parcel Health, has replaced plastic prescription bottles with mostly paper pill bottles, largely made from recycled paper. The company's Tully Tube uses 40% to 71% less plastic than conventional pill bottles and uses recyclable paper body, while a detachable plastic cap comes in child-resistant and easy-open versions. The product has sold over 1 million tubes since its introduction in 2024, expanding its reach to 71 locations across pharmacies, health systems, and veterinary practices. The Tully tube uses recycling paper and a detacher plastic cap to meet industry safety standards. The packaging works with most pharmacy automation systems and can sport custom branding. The startup's co-founder and CEO, Melinda Su-En Lee, said the paper packaging is equally safe and performs equally to its plastic counterparts. The next step is expanding beyond pill bottles to include compostable bags and plans to expand domestically and internationally.
