The man had been serving a three-year probation after pleading guilty to gun and drug charges and causing an accident involving death or personal injury. James J. Wyatt, a 28-year-old McKeesport man, has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and aggravated assault for stabbing a woman to death and injuring another in Downtown Pittsburgh in 2019. Wyatt was originally charged with criminal homicide, but this charge was changed and he also pleaded guilty for making repairs/selling offensive weapons. He stabbed Janice Purdue-Dance, 61, of Erie, in the neck at a bus stop on Sixth Avenue and then cut another woman's face, but she survived. Wyatt had been serving a three-year probation after pleading guilty to gun and drug charges and causing an accident involving death or personal injury in 2016 at the time of the murder. His defense attorney argued Wyatt was mentally incompetent to stand trial, citing a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and depression.
