Pittsburgh's roadwork headaches are getting worse

City data confirms a sharp rise in weekday road closures, with more work on the way. Pittsburgh's roadwork has worsened this year, with full road closures increasing 31% from 2025 and 61% from 2024, according to city data analyzed by Axios. The data also revealed that there have been 2,313 such closures this year through Oct. 23, up from 1,768 in 2025, and 1,439 in 2024. South Side Slopes, Sheraden, Troy Hill, and Bloomfield have been particularly affected by closures. Marlow Street in the West End saw the most closures, followed by Penn Avenue in Penn Avenue. Additionally, parking lane and sidewalk impacts are also high, with sidewalk obstructions up 21% compared to last year. City spokesperson Molly Onufer attributed the increase to funding from the Biden administration infrastructure plan, Pittsburgh Water's work to replace all residential lead pipes, and gas companies replacing old lines.
