Paintmaker PPG seeing benefits from surge in data center plans
PITTSBURGH -- In a concrete building known as "the bunker," researchers at PPG, a $24 billion company that makes paints, aimed torches at steel panels that were covered in a gray coating. Paintmaker PPG is seeing benefits from a surge in data center plans, as tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and other tech giants have rushed to build the computing sites powering artificial intelligence. The company expects its paint sales for data centers to triple this year from last year, surpassing the company's total sales of 7% to $4.5 billion. The surge in AI has also reached even ordinary goods, including paint, gravel, and wires and cables to carry electricity and data to thousands of servers. In the paint industry, PPG's biggest rival, Sherwin-Williams, said its paints go into nearly every corner of data centers, from steel beams to server racks. PPG was founded in 1883 as a maker of glass and later grew into one of the world's largest paint companies.
