The Last Word: Remembering Skeletons Found in 1988 at 23rd & Pittsburgh

In 1988, D’Amico’s Collision & Painting was looking forward to the construction of its new building. The first scoop of an excavator revealed a shocking discovery. The Last Word is revisiting a case where skeletons were found unexpectedly in 1988 at 23rd and Pittsburgh Avenue. The discovery was made by Dave D'Amico and Rob Filipowski, who were preparing to move their auto body shop from a vacant lot at this location. They identified the body as likely to have lived in the Old Erie County Alms House, which housed the county's indigent population from the mid-1800s to around 1920. The bodies were later exhumed from the unmarked cemetery when an industrial park was built at the site. Rob, now the owner of D'amico's Collision and Painting, sometimes worries about finding any more bodies in the neighborhood.
