Pittsburgh City Council member wants to tax the rich to help solve budget crunch
A Pittsburgh City Council member wants to tax the city's richest residents to help maintain services and fix the budget crunch. Pittsburgh City Council member, Barb Warwick, has proposed a 2% levy on the unearned income of the city's wealthiest residents to help maintain services and resolve a budget deficit. The proposal is part of a larger effort by progressive politicians to encourage wealthy individuals to contribute more towards funding programs and balance budgets. Warwick, a Democrat, said the fair share tax would impact the top 20%, but mostly the top 2% of the wealthiest individuals in the city. The tax would also tax things like patents and royalties. However, there are concerns about the ability of a city to retain wealthier residents, as they already pay the most in property taxes and wage tax.
