McKinley Park Community Grove Opens in Pittsburgh
A decade-plus in the making, McKinley Park's Community Grove at Chicken Hill has officially opened to the public. The City of Pittsburgh has opened the McKinley Park Community Grove at Chicken Hill, a section of McKinley park that was once home to a community baseball field. The project involved transforming the area into lawn space, a pavilion, trails, and an outdoor classroom. The space is intended to host youth programming and nature-based education initiatives, as well as opportunities to showcase local art and community history. Funding was provided through a master-planning and community engagement process initiated by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in 2016. The Community Grove was developed in close collaboration with residents and community partners, including the Beltzhoover Consensus Group, Knoxville Community Council, Voices Against Violence and Hilltop Alliance. A separate trail project is also set to rehabilitate over 1.3 miles of trails on the park's Chicken Hill side.
