Step inside one of the last mansions on Pittsburgh's Millionaire's Row
The grand structure included a billiards room, lounges for both men and women and even a personal chapel where the family attended mass. Mansions on Fifth on Fifth Avenue in Shadyside, Pittsburgh, was built for Willis McCook and his wife Mary, who were legal counsel to Henry Clay Frick in the early 1900s. The McCook family built a grand structure that included a billiards room, lounges for both men and women, and a personal chapel. However, the property was eventually seized by the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department due to back taxes owed in the 1930s. In 1949, the Bonavita family bought the house at a sheriff's sale for $28,000 and to offset maintenance costs, rented some rooms to Carnegie Institute of Technology students. The original stone foundation is visible in the basement and the original wine cellar is still well-stocked. The building was restored and opened as a hotel and event space in 2010.
