Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Pirates needed just one day off to lose a humbling series to lowly Oakland in the rearview mirror.

It may take longer to fix the wobbler error of the New York Mets.

Ke’Bryan Hayes tied career-highs with five hits and four RBI and the Pirates sent New York to their seventh straight loss with their 14-7 win Friday night.

Energized by adjusting his technique in the box during the end of last week’s West Coast trip — Hayes substituted a forward step with just a flick of his toe during his swing in an effort to improve his timing — the Pittsburgh third baseman has put together the warmest streak of his career since his stellar start in September 2020.

Hayes had a leadoff single in the third round against Tylor Megill (5-4) and a two-run double in the fourth as part of a 5-for-game.

5 night. Hayes bats . 558 (19 of 34) with 11 RBI over eight consecutive games started when he briefly dropped to seventh in the rankings with his batting average as low as 0.21.

He’s at .266 now. And it rises. quickly. Evidence that his motion modification—proven out of desperation after a four-stroke performance in Seattle—works well.

“I’ve been working really hard trying to figure out how to get back to the way I’ve been at bat in (2020),” Hayes said. “I just try to be aggressive out there, get my body in the right position and let the athleticism take over.”

The Pirates spent Thursday on a high after losing streak in a blowout to Oakland, which arrived at PNC Park early in the week with the worst record in the majors and left with only its third win of the season.

Pittsburgh certainly looked ready to move on while jumping on the Mets, who didn’t arrive from Atlanta until 4:30 a.m. after being swept by a depleting series at the hands of the rival Braves.

Jack Swinski went 3-for-4 with his 12th home run of the season. Carlos Santana hit two hits, including his fourth home run. Josh Palacios also had two hits for the Pirates. Andrew McCutcheon’s third-inning run scored his 1999th career home run.

Rich Hill (6-5) homered seven innings for his second consecutive win. The 43-year-old Hill gave up two runs on seven hits with two walks and six hits while throwing 119 pitches, the most by a Pirate since 2012.

“I’m not familiar with the number of pitches,” Hill said. “You pitch until the manager takes the ball out of your hands. Shelty let me out there and let me finish the seventh inning for which I’m obviously grateful.”

Francisco Lindor hit his 12th home run of the season with New York. Starling Marty twice played against the team he spent the first eight years of his career with (2012-19) but couldn’t stop the Mets’ free fall.

New York’s seven-game bracket is the longest since it fell seven times in a row in June 2019.

Mets manager Buck Showalter tried to stress the positive after the team placed Pete Alonso, who leads the game with a 22-game home run, on the injured list Friday for a bone bruise and sprain in his left wrist. However, even Showalter admitted that New York “looked like” they were fielded against a still-suffering Pittsburgh from a losing trip to Atlanta.

The Mets definitely looked out if during a sloppy sequence in the third that allowed the Pirates to take control.

Lindor mishandled the batter’s routine at shortstop with one out, turning a potential double play into runners on first and second. Suwinski walked to load the bases and Hayes sent a sharp single to left to score two outs. Ji Hwan Bae followed it up by dropping a hit down the third base line that was thrown into the right field corner by New York’s Eduardo Escobar. Hayes and Suwinski scored easily as Bay raced all the way to third to make it 7-2 and the Pirates were on their way.

Lindor took responsibility for the error and is baffled by his team’s slide 16-27 from a promising 14-7 start.

He said, “I honestly don’t know.” “I want to say it’s part of the season but I’ve been saying it for a long time. It’s time to turn the page. It’s time to be better.”

Pirates: RHP Vince Velasquez had surgery to repair a ligament in his right elbow on Wednesday and is out for the season. Velasquez, who had Tommy John surgery in 2010, is expected to miss 11 to 12 months. Velasquez adjusted his starting elbow on May 4 and spent three weeks on the injured list but only lasted three innings in his next start against Seattle on May 27.

The series continues on Saturday, as Pittsburgh’s Johan Oviedo (3-4, 4.29 ERA) is set to take on Kodai Senga (5-3, 3.75).
