PITTSFIELD — If you're looking to view the solar eclipse on Monday safely, stop by the Berkshire Athenaeum to grab a free pair of solar eclipse glasses.

Starting at 9 a.m. Friday, every service desk at the library will be handing out glasses until supplies last, according to the library's Facebook post.

"We are handing out one pair of glasses per household, and cannot hold glasses for later pickup," according to the post.

According to The Planetary Society, certified solar eclipse glasses are 100,000 times darker than ordinary sunglasses. They filter out nearly all visible light along with infrared and ultraviolet radiation. When you look through them, you should not be able to see anything but the sun itself. Looking at the sun without proper eye protection for even a short time can harm your eyes and risk permanently damaging your retina, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

At the Children's Desk, the library also has a few take-home cereal box solar eclipse kits available while supplies last.
