Residents show concern over proposed asphalt plant in East Huntingdon

Dozens of residents showed up to a public hearing Thursday at the Westmoreland County Courthouse. The project is slated to be completed by spring of 2027. Residents in East Huntingdon Township are expressing frustration over a proposed asphalt plant by Sandhill Materials, which is supposed to be built near Route 119. The land the proposed plant would sit on is already being developed. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact on health, wildlife, and the local farmlands. The Westmoreland County Industrial Development Authority has noted public comments about the project. The development authority originally planned to gift a $10 million tax bond for the project but was halted after public outcry. However, farmers in the area, like Sandhill Berries owners Richard and Susan Lynn, believe the lack of local zoning laws in East huntingdon is a reason for the site being prepared without notice.
