Costs at America's public universities are increasing, with annual sticker prices reaching the tens of thousands of dollars at public schools and surpassing the $100,000 threshold at many private peers. Financial aid packages cover about 35% of the in-state asking price at public school with at least 10,000 students, according to a Business Journal analysis of federal education data. This has led to a decrease in aid and a decrease of state funding for public colleges. The University of Pittsburgh had the highest share among Pittsburgh institutions of its reported total in-State student costs covered by institutional, state and federal grants in 2024-2025, at 40%. Other institutions such as Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Western University, and Slippery Rock University also contributed significantly.
